The Truth about Invisalign

Invisalign is the most popular clear aligner on the market.  Most patients choose Invisalign over Metal Braces or Clear Braces because it is a more aesthetic treatment modality to straighten your teeth. Many people consider Invisalign to be “invisible braces” because of their aesthetic appeal- they are virtually unnoticeable.  There are many advantages of Invisalign when compared with braces such as:

  • greater aesthetics
  • greater comfort
  • better oral hygiene
  • no food restrictions
  • no emergencies
  • fewer office visits

Because traditional braces have been around for more than a century many people have questions and/or concerns regarding the use of Invisalign to straighten their teeth.  Below are common myths surrounding Invisalign.

Myth #1- Invisalign doesn’t work as well as traditional braces

Invisalign can successfully treat most patients, but not all, when compared with traditional braces.  Invisalign auxiliaries such as elastic wear, buttons, bite stops, mandibular advancement tabs, etc. can be used to treat most patients but not all.  Certain patients bites that require jaw surgery or extractions cannot be corrected with Invisalign as successfully as they can with traditional braces.

Myth #2- Invisalign costs more than braces

At Santelli Orthodontics in Boca Raton, FL and Wellington, FL the cost of Invisalign when compared with braces is the same (or slightly more).  Many factors are considered when taking into account the cost of treatment such as case complexity and length of treatment time.  Because Dr. Brad Santelli is a Diamond Preferred Invisalign Provider and the Top Invisalign Doctor in Boca Raton, FL and Wellington, FL (Top 1% Worldwide) the lab fee Invisalign charges is greatly reduced.  Therefore, we are able to lower our treatment fee by passing along our cost savings to our patients.  Most dentists or orthodontists charge significantly higher fees for patients being treated with Invisalign simply because they have not achieved the same doctor level as Dr. Santelli and therefore the lab fees are higher.

Myth #3- Invisalign is harder to maintain when compared with braces

Compliance is a must when considering Invisalign.  Invisalign must be worn 22 hours per day and is only to be removed when brushing and flossing and when eating.  We recommend cleaning Invisalign aligners with anti bacterial soap, a toothbrush and water.  Brushing after eating and prior to reinserting the aligners is also recommended.  Because Invisalign clear aligners are removable, a good oral hygiene regime is easy.  We recommend you brush and floss after every meal and before you good to bed.  This will ensure that your oral hygiene is optimal.  There are no food restrictions with Invisalign.  Simply remove it when eating.

Braces are more difficult to clean especially when flossing under the wires.  Particles of food can get stuck around the brackets and wires providing a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and plaque.  This will result in puffy gums or gingivitis and can lead to irreversible white marks called decalcifications within the enamel of the teeth.

What can I say? I just love my patients!
